Rayne Women's Institute

Special Interest Groups

Rayne WI have a number of special interest groups.

Rayne WI Drawing Group

Taking turns to host the 'classes' a group of six members meet fortnightly in our homes. We are experimenting with pencil drawing (with rubbers!), water soluble pencils, and sometime in the future, watercolours. All very enjoyable.

Rayne WI Reading Group

Once a month 7 or 8 members meet to discuss a book of their choice. We have guidance from the Braintree Library and Internet Reading Groups. Books that have been read include 'The Sixth Lamentation', and 'Tommy Glover's Sketch of Heaven'; which gave us a lovely insight into the life of a young evacuee, and was greatly enjoyed by all.

 Rayne WI Darts Team

At Rayne WI we have had a Darts Team for a long time, the competing members changing over the years. In recent times our success has been up and down. We take part in the county-wide tournament which is split into groups. During the season, which runs from the beginning of September until the end of March, we play six matches - three home and three away. We play as teams of four, the home team supplying a non-playing scorer. The group winners go forward to quarter-finals, the winners of which go to the finals evening in May in Chelmsford, when the semis and final are played. This year our group included Stisted, Dolphin, Halstead, Great & Little Leighs and Walthambury Jays. In the past we have also played teams from Great Hallingbury, Hatfield Peverel, Belchamp St Paul and Radwinter. We practise at a local pub most Tuesday evenings and have lots of fun. Outside the tournament we have a few friendly matches just for pleasure. We always enjoy our matches, even if we don't win, and have met some lovely ladies over the years, making firm friends. We would recommend joining a WI Darts Team. Not only is it a very sociable activity but it is great fun and good exercise. For the latest great news about the darts team please see this page.

Rayne WI Scrabble Groups

There are two scrabble groups for our members.

  •  3rd Tuesday in the month - 2pm to 4pm
  •  3rd Wednesday in the month - 8pm - 10pm.

Numbers vary between 8 and 10 players at each session. A cup of tea and companionship make the games very enjoyable. Please contact the hostess on 01376 324051 for further details. Why not come along and test your word skills?
